Celebrating women leaders in climate action: Susana Muhamad's inspiring journey

As the world gets ready to commemorate International Women's Day, let's highlight the remarkable contributions of women who are leading the charge for climate action. One such inspiring figure is Susana Muhamad, Colombia's Minister of Environment and Sustainable Development, whose dedication to the environment and her cultural heritage deserves to be given attention.
Born into a Palestinian-Colombian family, Susana Muhamad has woven her rich heritage into her environmental advocacy, embodying the intersectionality of cultural identity and sustainability. Her journey towards environmental stewardship began long before she was appointed Minister, marked by a deep-seated commitment to safeguarding Colombia's natural treasures.

Muhamad's leadership is exemplified by Colombia's recent announcement naming Cali as the host city for COP16, the Biodiversity Summit, highlighting her nation's dedication to biodiversity conservation. This decision confirms Colombia's role in global environmental initiatives that we have already seen during COP28 and since the start of Gustavo Petro's presidency.

Muhamad's Palestinian heritage influences her approach to environmental policy and emphasises the interconnectedness between people and the planet. In an interview with Middle East Eye, she eloquently articulated her belief that "our roots are fundamental" and that understanding and honouring one's heritage is essential for fostering a sense of belonging and responsibility towards the environment. That's why her commitment goes beyond policy initiatives; it goes hand in hand with her advocacy for community engagement and inclusive decision-making processes. Her leadership style gives space to collaboration and dialogue, recognising the need to include diverse perspectives and experiences for effective environmental governance.
On this International Women's Day, let us celebrate Maria Susana Muhamad and the countless women like her who are shaping a more sustainable and inclusive world for us and the generations to come.
