The Swedish organization Stockholms Stadsmission is now opening its third food store in Matmissionen - a major investment together with the grocery industry. The stores sells good products that would otherwise go to waste at a lower price for members, people in financial vulnerability. The goal is to reduce the climate footprint, food waste and help people in need. Thank you for the encouragement! This third store in Hallunda Centrum is the first out of three that we are opening in the Stockholm region this year, and is part of a larger expansion. We see a great need for people who are financially vulnerable to be able to buy affordable food in order to make ends meet. We also see great potential in reducing food waste. By opening these three stores, our aim is to reduce food waste by up to 3000 tons per year, making affordable food available for another 6000 people living in financial vulnerability and provide 45 spaces for work practice for people who need support in order to get back into the labor market. Please follow our work as we progress, either through our website (https://www.stadsmissionen.se/vad-vi-gor/matmissionen), or via Stockholms Stadsmission’s social media channels!

Nope, they work with AXfood, and get food from Hemköp, Willys and others. It's not that simple to sell food close to the expiration date or already expired. Also, these shops don't want food that people don't want to eat anymore (otherwise you end up with a situation just like the second-hand clothes market)

Thank you for your answer I hope every town in Sweden will soon have a "matmission", there are enough financially vulnerable people and enough food waste to meet this goal (and more) sadly. 💚

It's crazy to think that reducing food waste could prevent over 100 billion tonnes of CO2 emissions from now until 2050 if scaled globally. It is one of the most under appreciated ways of decarbonising. Project Drawdown lists it in the top 3 individual solutions to reaching 1.5C https://www.drawdown.org/solutions/reduced-food-waste

One of the best anti-food waste initiatives in Stockholm. They just opened their 3rd food shop but there should be so many more, in every neighbourhood basically! You can also shop there if you are not a member :)
