For requiring the film industry to go green

Some actors and celebrities are known for flying private jets and demanding high-emissions ”celebrity riders.” But more and more actors are rejecting this kind of behaviour. More than 100 British actors have signed the new Green Rider campaign, agreeing to consider and reduce the carbon impact of requirements or conditions attached to their contracts, known as riders. According to @the_guardian, the list includes Ben Whishaw, Mark Rylance, Harriet Walter, Juliet Stevenson, Gemma Arterton, David Harewood, Bill Nighy, Miranda Richardson, Paapa Essiedu, Bella Ramsey, Adrian Dunbar and Romola Garai. Paapa Essiedu said in a statement: “This summer has brought into sharp focus the reality that climate disaster is not a problem of the future but one of the now. The accepted normal practices of the film industry are rife with waste and a lack of consciousness as to the damage we are causing our planet. But these practices can be challenged and changed.”
According to the Screen New Deal report, the average big-budget film production produces 2,840 tonnes of CO2. The Green Rider campaign will be launched by the actors’ union Equity at the Edinburgh international television festival.
