Day 694: National Egg Day. Eggs are usually left for birds, reptiles, and fish - but there are some mammals that also lay eggs. You probably already know that platypuses do, but they aren't the only ones. . Fact: There are actually 5 species of mammals that lay eggs. Monotremes (the term for mammals that lay eggs) include platypuses, Western long-beaked echidna, Eastern long-beaked echidna, Sir David's long-beaked echidna and the short-beaked echidna. There were once even more egg-laying conundrum species, but these 5 are all that remain. However, the count could change within our lifetimes, as two of the four echidna species are classified as critically endangered. Logging, farming, and hunting all threaten the 'spiny anteaters'. . .
