Most of us usually stay connected to our fraternity through internet during a journey in car or train or bus but in the process, we unknowingly or unintentionally miss the valuable lessons from our fellow passengers, whom we may not meet again in this lifetime. An interaction, which could have changed our life for better stay with us for rest of life only as a missed opportunity. "Conversation in cars" is an intelligent series to remind us about our one normal behaviour before mobile phones overtook our very being from ourselves.
The conversation in episode 2 between Nick Nuttall and Co-founder of Dollaride Su Sanni is interesting because
1. it is providing useful insights about options for commuting to and from Manhattan, New York. It appears from the conversations that the drivers and the would-be passengers come to know about each other's proximity from App. There are also other options like yellow taxis and dollar vans as city suburbs is expanding fast.
2. It is indicating that electric cars are also being popularized and is becoming a viable option in this segment of market, with right kind of financing. Upfront investment for electric cars is capital intensive but Dollaride obtained 10 million US$ grant from government and fifty million US$ as debt finance. from local green banks. It is being used by 100000 passengers with 413 drivers at the rate of 2 - 3 US$, which suggests that payback period is expected to be not more than two years. It is running for six years.
3. Easing the end mile connectivity facilitates the mass transit systems. Having right kind of first and last mile connectivity or the "end mile" connectivity is a game changer for popularizing mass transit systems. Use of mass transit is much desired because it reduces per person greenhouse gas emission or per person air pollution. It also helps in clearing up the city road space as larger is the number of commutes in buses or metros or trains lesser is number of personal cars shall occupy city roads. Air pollution management and GHG mitigation both advocates use of mass transit.
4. Small investment can have far reaching positive ripple effects. This is another case study for #Move the money campaign of WDHT.
A system of electric end mile connectivity has already evolved in India, which is called Toto. Toto is small four-wheel electric vehicle, which is usually barred in highways but is lifeline in lanes and by lanes of small towns and cities. It has exponentially grown with private financing in last ten years, but Toto does not have the app -support. Having an app-support for local transit is a good idea because it may help in decongestion in the city roads without losing the earning opportunities of toto drivers.
Gratitude for sharing this information. Well, I also take this opportunity for expressing gratitude to all my co-passengers, who taught me very valuable lessons and insights during my journeys through their rich or silent interactions.
