The Movement for the Survival of the Ogoni People (MOSOP) has been a cornerstone of the climate justice movement in Nigeria. This movement, which began in the early 1990s, sought to address the environmental degradation and human rights abuses caused by oil extraction in the Niger Delta. Led by Ken Saro-Wiwa and other brave activists, MOSOP brought global attention to the injustices faced by the Ogoni people and the destructive practices of oil companies in the region. Their struggle was not without sacrifice, as many, including Ken Saro-Wiwa, paid the ultimate price for their advocacy.
The legacy of MOSOP is a testament to the power of grassroots movements in achieving environmental justice. It serves as a reminder of the importance of standing up against environmental injustices and the need for a continued commitment to protecting our environment and communities. The sacrifices made by Ken Saro-Wiwa and others have paved the way for ongoing efforts to hold corporations accountable and to push for sustainable and equitable development.
Today marked a significant milestone for LincGreen Prospect in our climate action journey. It is crucial to join hands with our predecessors in this fight, combining the strength of the young with the wisdom and experience of the old. We had the privilege of being part of a conference in Ogoni land, Rivers State, Nigeria, invited by our esteemed environmentalist leader and current president of MOSOP, Engr. Olu Andah Wai-Ogosu. Our co-founder Diolu Tobechukwu Prosper delivered a keynote speech on the role of youth in climate action. This experience was humbling for us, standing on the same grounds as the heroes of the Niger Delta.
Being part of this conference underscored our commitment to sparking an environmental awakening that will trigger innovation and help us navigate a path to prosperity, economic power, and growth beyond oil. Thank you, Engr. Olu Andah, for recognizing our work and for your enduring fight for our generation. Your wisdom and dedication inspire us to continue striving for a better future.
