Kenya championing greater use of renewable energy in Africa
Kenya generates more than 70% of its energy from renewable sources like geothermal, hydro and wind energy, with the solar energy sector becoming attractive for industrial and home use.
Kenyan government zero rates the importation of some inputs like solar panels and inverters to encourage sales.
During the inaugural Africa Climate Summit in Nairobi, Kenya, President William Ruto, echoed that Africa can manage to depend entirely on renewable energy,
"The continent has enough potential to be entirely self-sufficient with the mixture of wind, solar, geothermal, sustainable biomass and hydropower." he said.
However, solar technology that is imported into Kenya continues to be taxed with import duties and retailers often have to charge over 15 percent value added tax making consumers foot the high cost of going green.

Kenya is a giant in green energy, with over 80 percent of energy emanating from renewable sources. I am happy that the country continues to do more to upscaling green energy sources by offering incentives on the importation of solar panels and other green energy inputs.

Kenya has been leading the way in terms of renewable energy in East Africa and in the whole continent. Not many countries boast of having numbers of 80 % upwards of their energy coming from renewable energy. This is why the country is best placed to lead the changes in energy sector in the continent. They should also see it as an opportunity to increase their green energy production capacity

The government should now push this & increase from 70% to atleast 80% as this will accelerate in reaching climate demands. Kenyans opt not to be reluctant when it comes to embrace this.

@chris_ndungu The way to achieve goals as increase in renewable energy production is by investments in Research & Design when it comes to sustainable power. The country's power needs keep on increasing and as such, they have to be proactive to ensure they do not resort to unsustainable power production methods. For example, it is about time Kenya completed the seven forks dams, don't you think?
