UFS Researcher fights plastic waste with biodegradable polymers.

Dr. Julia Puseletso Mofokeng, a senior lecturer at the University of the Free State (UFS), is making significant strides in combating plastic pollution through her innovative research on biodegradable polymers. Her work aims to provide environmentally friendly alternatives to traditional petroleum-based plastics, which contribute millions of tons of waste to oceans and ecosystems annually. Mofokeng's passion for this research was sparked by her experiences growing up in Bophelong, Qwaqwa, where she witnessed the harmful effects of plastic waste in her community.

She believes that biodegradable polymers, derived from natural sources such as vegetable oils and starches, can effectively reduce plastic waste and environmental degradation. These materials can break down without leaving harmful residues, offering a promising solution to a global crisis. Mofokeng’s research focuses on creating polymer blends that not only decompose rapidly—often within months under the right conditions—but also maintain strength comparable to traditional plastics through the addition of natural fibers and minerals.

While the trend towards bio-based packaging is gaining traction among food outlets and restaurants, Mofokeng emphasizes the need for stricter regulations to make biodegradable options standard. Additionally, her team is actively collaborating with local communities in Qwaqwa to address groundwater contamination. Mofokeng’s global impact is further illustrated by her research partnerships with institutions in Libya and Serbia, all while inspiring future scientists dedicated to sustainable solutions.
