Brazilian aircraft manufacturer Embraer is planning to build a new factory near SĂŁo Paulo to produce electric vertical take-off and landing (eVTOL) aircraft, also known as flying taxis. The company aims to have the eVTOL taxis operational by 2026, resembling small helicopters with a capacity to transport six people. The factory will be located in Taubate, close to SĂŁo Paulo, and trips using these electric aircraft are estimated to cost between $50 to $100 per passenger each way. The eVTOL taxis will be emissions-free, making them environmentally friendly compared to traditional aircraft, and Embraer has already received orders for 2,850 units, totaling around $1.5 billion in value.
Eve Air Mobility, a subsidiary of Embraer based in Fort Lauderdale, will be responsible for manufacturing the electric taxis. United Airlines has shown interest in partnering with Eve Air Mobility to provide an electric air taxi service in the San Francisco Bay Area, starting in 2026. The airline has already invested $15 million in Eve Air Mobility and has conditionally ordered 200 electric aircraft, with an option to purchase an additional 200. United Airlines and Eve Air Mobility are working together to establish the necessary infrastructure, routes, and landing areas to support the eVTOL flights in the densely populated urban region. Both companies see this initiative as a cost-efficient and sustainable transportation option for residents and visitors in the Bay Area.
