OPENART

Climate love

A free-for-all exhibition that visualizes climate challenges and solutions

It’s sometimes hard to imagine what we can’t see before us. Like how much wood is needed to offset one person's carbon footprint.
This is why I like Mattias Käll's artwork ”Carbon Storage Project,” a part of the OpenArt biennial in Örebro, Sweden.
Mattias Källs artwork consists of wooden cubes representing the total volume of wood needed to offset one person's carbon footprint for a year.
Mattias Käll says: ”I invite you to sit on the cubes and engage in discussions about techno-optimism, desire, speed, resonance, the forest, and nature's own solutions.”

Artists from around the world are invited to participate in OpenArt. They often come to Örebro for the production and/or installation of works. OpenArt requires that artists' travels within Sweden (as well as from/to Norway and Denmark) are made using environmentally friendly travel methods.
For all events where OpenArt is the host, vegetarian food is chosen and single-use plastic items are actively avoided.
Economically, OpenArt works to reduce its carbon footprint in its operations both during the planning and exhibition years. This involves choosing ideas, materials, and planning execution with a focus on sustainability. By thinking circularly and being able to collect, reuse, and recycle materials, costs are reduced while also benefiting the environment.
Contemporary art can play a role in raising awareness about issues such as climate, identity, or class. OpenArt is a free exhibition spread out over central Örebro, which means people of all ages are included and can experience the exhibition on their own terms.
