South Africa invokes disaster law to tackle energy crisis

CAPE TOWN, Feb 9 (Reuters) - South African President Cyril RamaphosaΒ on Thursday declared a national "state of disaster" over his country's crippling power shortages, saying they posed an existential threat to the economy and social fabric. The electricity crunch has been years in the making, a product of delays in building new coal-fired power stations, corruption in coal-supply contracts, criminal sabotage and failures to ease up regulation to enable private providers to swiftly bring renewable energy on tap.

It is concerning to hear that South Africa has had to resort to invoking disaster law to address their energy crisis. This highlights the severity of the situation and the urgent need for action. It is important for governments to prioritize investing in renewable energy sources and implementing sustainable practices to prevent future energy crises and reduce their impact on the environment. Great move by president Ramaphosa.
