Aviva Launches Floating Ecosystem to Boost Sustainability in the River Ouse

Aviva is making a significant impact on local sustainability efforts by funding York's first floating ecosystem in the River Ouse. In collaboration with environmental charities St Nicks and York Cares, this innovative project is part of the city’s ‘green corridors’ initiative, aimed at enhancing biodiversity and water quality. Launched from North Street Gardens, this pontoon-like structure will serve as a natural habitat, fostering wildlife and promoting a healthier ecosystem in the river.

The floating ecosystem will be constructed and maintained by Biomatrix, a leading ecological technology company known for implementing similar structures worldwide. Made from recycled and non-toxic materials, the floating islands will support diverse native plant species, providing habitats for birds and aquatic life. The structure, measuring approximately 16 meters long by 2.4 meters wide, is designed to rise and fall with water levels, ensuring its longevity of over 20 years with regular maintenance. By creating multiple layers of biodiversity above and below the water, the ecosystem will naturally cleanse the river over time.

In addition to its ecological benefits, the floating ecosystem will engage the local community by providing a lasting environmental focal point. Volunteers from Aviva, along with representatives from St Nicks and York Cares, will join forces to assemble and plant the ecosystem, highlighting the collaborative spirit of this initiative. As the structure evolves and flourishes, it will offer opportunities for community interaction and connection with nature right in the heart of the city.

Holly Hennell, Community Impact Manager at Aviva, expressed the company's excitement about participating in this transformative project. She emphasized Aviva's commitment to supporting local environmental initiatives that promote sustainability and prepare the community for the future. Jonathan Dent from St Nicks added that this project represents the culmination of extensive collaboration among York organizations, allowing residents to enjoy the wildlife that thrives along the river for generations to come. With the involvement of Biomatrix, the project promises not only ecological restoration but also enhanced community engagement and appreciation for the natural environment.
