Brisbane City Council food waste recycling arrives in more suburbs, waste strategy released.

An extra 5,290 Brisbane homes will have to access to food waste recycling services from February, as the council expands the initiative to several more suburbs. The move comes as Brisbane City Council releases its new waste strategy for consultation, which aims to transition the Queensland capital into a "zero-waste city". Carina, Carina Heights, Norman Park, Westlake, New Farm, West End and East Brisbane will be among the new suburbs where the food waste recycling service will be rolled out. Residents will be able to use green-top bins to dispose of their food waste, which the council will then turn into compost. Lord Mayor Adrian Schrinner said food waste made up about a quarter of the average household general waste bin in Brisbane. "This can be reduced by putting waste such as fruit and vegetable scraps, teabags, coffee grounds, eggshells and old breads and cereal into the green waste bin," he said. The council's website says the food recycling service can also be used for takeaway food, pasta, tea leaves, grains, rice and coffee grounds. Seafood scraps, dairy products and meat – including bones – cannot be thrown into the green bin for food recycling. https://www.abc.net.au/news/2023-11-24/brisbane-city-council-expands-food-waste-recycling/103143768
