In a pretty significant move on National Environment Day, Chile's President Gabriel Boric inaugurated the Biodiversity and Protected Areas Service (SBAP) under the newly enacted Law for Nature. This establishment is meant to be a response to the triple environmental crisis affecting both Chile and the world: climate change, pollution, and biodiversity loss.
"If we don't take this seriously we won't be saved. Taking care of nature is taking care of ourselves. We are part of the same ecosystem" said Chile's President Gabriel Boric Font
The SBAP directly addresses two of these crises, biodiversity and climate, by creating a dedicated institution tasked with conserving biodiversity and managing protected natural areas. The urgency is underscored by Chile's alarming statistics, with half of ecosystems and two-thirds of species facing survival threats. Moreover, the SBAP will facilitate efficient resource utilization, reducing redundancy and streamlining conservation efforts.
The SBAP also recognizes the role of private protected areas in conservation and integrates them into the National System of Protected Areas. This move, accompanied by incentives like tax exemptions, strengthens biodiversity conservation efforts. With this new law, Chile is better equipped to protect its natural heritage, combat biodiversity loss, and contribute to global environmental stewardship. A great effort from the current government! 💚

The launch of Chile's Biodiversity and Protected Areas Service is a positive step towards addressing the urgent need to protect our planet's biodiversity and combat the environmental crisis. It is encouraging to see governments taking action towards sustainable practices and protecting our natural resources.
