Cambodia 'upcycler' turns tonnes of plastic bottles into brooms

In a bid to reduce single use plastic pollution in Cambodia, entrepreneur Has Kea, 41, has invested changing plastic bottles into stips which are the turned to brooms bristles. This plastic bottles are bought from garbage collectors turned into strips and later softened in water before they are sewn with metal wires into the ends of a bamboo stick. "This broom is quite solid, not easy to break," said Suon Kosal, a 26-year-old Buddhist monk whose temple bought 80 of the brooms last month. This is a great transformation in the in the fight against plastic pollution. In the last 11 months they have transformed around 40 tonnes of discarded plastic bottles, about 5,000 bottles per day, by "upcycling" them into brooms they say are more robust than regular brushes. Alongside making the environment habitable this practice is now a way to create job opportunities for fellows in Cambodia.
