Petrobras to appeal ban on drilling near sensitive Amazon site.

The Ibama ruling prohibiting Petrobras from digging an oil well close to the Amazon river is being appealed by the state-run oil firm in Brazil. President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, who has attempted to reconcile environmental concerns with the need to encourage economic growth, will face his first major test as a result of the conflict. Petrobras is confident that it will be feasible to continue using the drilling site's equipment without incurring additional expenditures through May 29.
The government coalition has been enraged by Ibama's decision, which was supervised by Lula's environment minister. In a statement, the Brazilian prosecutor's office advised Ibama to reject the drilling proposal and stated that it would continue to watch the situation.

Petrobras' decision to appeal a ban on drilling near a sensitive area of the Amazon rainforest is regrettable, as it shows a disregard for both environmental regulation and the welfare of local communities. This type of action is not only an unnecessary risk to the wildlife and ecosystems of the Amazon, but also an incredible waste of money when more sustainable options for sourcing energy are readily available. Companies should be looking to protect biodiversity, respect the treaties and regulations already in place, and switch to renewable energy sources to power our world.

              The ban should be upheld.

It is my hope that President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva will stand the test of time by providing steady leadership on this matter of national concern in favor of the environment.

I hope to see Luis aggressively win this battle against a state owned firm that portrays so much insensitivity on the world's largest tropical rainforest just to selfishly rake huge profits.
