19 para, 66 pages, 56 action points with 84 sub-action points - these numbers are indicators of the volume and issues covered in this Pact for Future, Other pacts may also have similar coverages. The significance of this pact is that it is supposed capture the voices of future. Youth leaders are heard and celebrated during the process in UN Summit of Future.
Going through the text multiple times suggest that voice of youth is heard but their deep concerns are yet to be addressed with clarity and convictions. A vision statement which can bring the seniors and juniors for teaming together for common well-being is missing. Humans do not only want to survive but want also to thrive happy and healthy. Humans want happiness for their children and generations to come. The word happiness could not be found once in the whole text of pact for Future.
This pact has been divided into five major broad heads namely:
1. Sustainable Development and financing for development
2. International Peace and Security
3. Science Technology and innovation and digital cooperation
4. Youth and Future Generations
5. Transforming global governance
Wholehearted effort to prevent persistent crisis and break down, recommitting to International laws, aspiring to global transformation for revival of hope and opportunity, redressal of injustice, embracing diversity, protection of human rights, combating climate change, meeting sustainable development goals, restructuring UN Security Council, eradication of poverty are agreed by this pact.
Every action point is explained in following sections.
The call for reform is welcome. But in absence of specific timelines, the action points remain open ended. The text has covered very pertinent issues and challenges, which are being faced by current global leadership. Unrest and wars, climate crisis, economic inequality, unmet UN Sustainable Development Goals, constraints of global peace keeping forces, lack of strength and empowerment of United Nations -all issues are deeply bothering present leaderships, and it seems that the senior most leaders are admitting what could have been and should have been done through this pact to future generations. This is not an admittance in despair but is wishing to do the right things now onwards. However, it is not clear how these unfulfilled wishes shall be realized in to action as the world is painfully fragmented by conflicting interest.
Speeches of very bright and upbeat young leaders are available in the online video recordings of UN Future Summit 2024. The videos of passion and positivity of physically challenged political science graduate from Quatar, dreams of indigenous young lady and others rekindle hope and trust among a larger audience for justice and equity. It was also heartening to see all these online sessions are also web-casted in sign language.
But the pact is almost silent about physically and mentally challenged citizens, though one estimate suggests that 1 billion out of 8 billion global population is living with some sort of disability. Wars and Climate Change both make life more difficult for people with disability. Security and human rights are frequently compromised for them. The pact should have provisions for all because inclusive growth is the common future goal. The innocent yet very vibrant appeal of twenty-two-year-old Ghanim Mohammed AI Muftah in UN Summit for Future is actually a representation of one in every eight citizens in today's world. This should be acknowledged with clear specific commitments to make life resilient for the citizens with physical or mental challenges.
Phasing out of dirty fuels demands more emphasis than mere mentioning twice under Action Point 9 because this is not only a key issue for sustainable economy buy also for global peace talk.
This pact for future is beginning of empowering the future generation. Future Pact needs more revisions in very near future for realizing far reaching changes.
I would also look forward for ways and means for few other futuristic issues through programmes taken under this pact:
1. Inequality exists not only in terms of wealth but also in terms of accessibility to natural resources, digital world. Riches have far better access to natural resources but still many of these resources (other than land and minerals) are not necessarily “owned” by them like currency. Our biodiversity and natural resources need to be conserved, replenished for equitable access by future generations.
2. Intergenerational inequalities need to be addressed by restraining current unsustainable consumptions.
3. Corruption is pervasive and is a huge barrier in building a better tomorrow. Corruption results in accumulation of wealth in hands with no intention for welfare but we do not talk much about corruption for the typical inconveniences it brings into the table. Corruption should be stopped for channelizing funds for healthy, sustaining a peaceful world.
4. Topmost riches and leading scientific research institutes like NASA are now exploring the scope of multi-planetary expansion of human civilization. No vision is included for not repeating the mistakes of past colonialism.
5. Social media is invading and is deeply influencing our thoughts, values, belief systems and respond-abilities at mass scale even without our knowledge or consent. These unavoidable phenomena may be used for bringing rapid positive behavioural changes and upscaling good practices.
6. Ethical surveillance on use of AI needs collaborations across boundaries.
Reaching global consensus for future generation is praiseworthy. It appears that realizing action points of this Future Pact shall need rapid improvisation. A transparent joint monitoring by youth and seniors may drive the changes faster.
Climate love for this unique historical endeavour.
