THE STORM HAS REARRANGED THE EARTH'S ATMOSPHERE 🌐
☄️ The most powerful magnetic storm that struck the Earth in mid-May 2024 caused polar lights in the tropics and temperate latitudes of the planet. It also led to global changes in the structure of the Earth's atmosphere.
👀 Researchers from the United States made this discovery while analyzing data that was collected during a magnetic storm in May using the GOLD probe. It was launched into space in January 2018 to observe the boundary between the atmosphere and space during geomagnetic storms and other manifestations of "space weather".
🌀 Using the satellite's instruments, scientists tracked how the composition and properties of the Earth's thermosphere, the upper layer of its atmosphere, changed between May 9 and May 14.
🟢 This anomalous storm was marked not only by flashes of light from auroras in low latitudes, but also by increased warming of the atmosphere in the vicinity of the Earth's poles. This led to the fact that the air flows began to move rapidly from the circumpolar regions towards the equator.
🔹 GOLD measurements showed that the beginning of the magnetic storm was accompanied by a sharp increase in the heating of the Earth's thermosphere in the vicinity of its poles, where charged particles from near-Earth space easily penetrate. Their interactions with magnetic fields and ions led to the warming of the thermosphere by several hundred degrees Kelvin, with temperatures in the circumpolar regions increasing by 1.4 thousand degrees Kelvin at an altitude of 160 km from the Earth's surface.
🟥 This warming, as scientists note, led to a reorganization of the atmosphere at the global level. There were serious shifts in the ratio of oxygen atoms and nitrogen molecules in the thermosphere, as well as the appearance of giant air flows and vortices that moved from the poles toward the equator of the Earth. Scientists also recorded anomalies in the motion and interactions of low-energy particles, which had not previously been observed during magnetic storms.
🔵 Now scientists are trying to understand whether this was characteristic only of this May magnetic storm or whether it also occurs with other powerful geomagnetic disturbances.
🔄 Climate change and the natural disasters that are taking place all over the planet are affecting all countries of the world. It is time for us humans to become one big family, to realize that every member of the family is worthy of respect and that responsibility for the planet lies with everyone. It is important to unite all scientific potential of mankind in a single scientific center as soon as possible, to solve the climate issue and protect the Earth.
