Debate is running through #EU in the strive to diversify #naturalgas supply as a consequence of the war in Ukraine. A lot of emphasis is placed on #LNG, with leaders pushing for the construction of new regasification plants. ✋ However, every move should be made cold-minded, taking into account the (in)famous energy trilemma: energy equity – energy security – energy sustainability. Considering the last vertex of the triangle we mentioned, LNG supply to southern Europe emits from 20% to 176% more than import from Russia through pipelines, fact. Some of these emissions are due to entrapped or operations-related CO2, but some others to methane leaks (methane GWP[2] 100 is 28 and GWP 20 a staggering 84). Even though natural gas supply emissions are only about 10-20% of the whole value chain (the rest is end-use combustion), these facts stress the need to move to fossil-free energy sources to get more independent and achieve the local and international emission targets. ➡️ We’ve already made a post about the cost of postponing climate actions, so again, let’s make choices based on a scientific approach, comparing what’s least worst! Yes, we should towards a fossil-fuel energy system, this is the only solution
