Atlas Renewable Energy signs 375GWh 24/7 PPA with Codelco

The recent power purchase agreement (PPA) signed between Atlas Renewable Energy and Chilean state-owned mining company Codelco represents a pivotal step towards both energy sustainability and technological innovation in Chile. The agreement, spanning 15 years, entails the delivery of 375GWh annually from a solar-plus-storage project, marking Atlas's foray into battery storage technology to ensure a continuous 24/7 power supply.

The project's significance is underscored by its role in enhancing the volume of renewable energy sources within Chile's power system. As the world grapples with the imperative of transitioning to cleaner and more sustainable energy solutions, Atlas Renewable Energy's commitment to integrating battery storage technology into its portfolio aligns with the global push for increased reliance on renewable resources.

The specifics of the project, including its nameplate generation, energy storage capacity, and location, are yet to be disclosed. Nevertheless, the emphasis on a 15-year commitment to supplying power round the clock is a testament to the project's long-term impact and contribution to Chile's energy security.

Carlos Barrera, CEO of Atlas Renewable Energy, aptly notes the project's significance as a key entry point into battery storage technology. This move reflects the company's strategic vision to amplify renewable energy sources and address the challenges of intermittent generation, contributing to a more stable and reliable power system.

Atlas Renewable Energy's extensive presence in Latin America, particularly in Chile and Brazil, positions it as a key player in the region's renewable energy landscape. The company's track record of securing significant funding, as exemplified by the US$448 million from the Brazilian Development Bank for a 902MWp project in Minas Gerais, further highlights the importance and scale of its contributions to the transition to clean energy.

Moreover, the acquisition of Atlas by fund manager Global Infrastructure Partners (GIP) and private equity firm Actis in October 2022 underscores the confidence and investment interest in the company's role in shaping the renewable energy future. The Chilean solar-plus-storage project not only reinforces Atlas's commitment to sustainable energy solutions but also stands as a beacon of progress in the ongoing global effort to build a greener and more resilient future.
