Yet another one of Australia's largest retailers commits to 100% renewable energy by 2025! What they have to say: "It’s undeniable that our climate is changing – from increasing temperatures and rainfall patterns to catastrophic natural disasters, we’re already seeing the impact of this change play out across the world. At Officeworks, we believe that every business has a role to play in reaching a net-zero emissions future and limit global warming to less than 2° this century, a limit which scientists say we need to stick to if we’re to avoid the worst impacts of climate change." What they are doing: "Greenhouse gas emissions caused from electricity generation are a known key contributor to global warming, making up more than 30% of global emissions. That’s why from 2025, we will only be using renewable electricity to power our operations. To help us achieve this goal, we’ll be installing solar panels on 80 of our stores over the coming years, and exploring other ways we can increase our renewable energy usage. The most sustainable energy, however, is the energy you don’t use in the first place – which is why we’re continuing to look for ways to improve our energy efficiency so that we can cut down our overall usage." The story so far: "Over the past five years, we’ve successfully reduced our carbon emissions by 26%. We did this through installing more energy efficient LED lighting – 99% of our stores now have LED lighting on the shop floor – and building energy management systems, which monitor and regulate our energy usage. In 2019, we set a target to reduce our direct emissions by 25% on an FY18 baseline, and in September 2020 announced our commitment to achieve net-zero emissions by 2030." https://www.officeworks.com.au/information/about-us/pdp/climate-action-1 Officeworks also commits to Reduce emissions in their supply chain: https://www.officeworks.com.au/information/about-us/pdp/climate-action-2 and Plant 2 million trees on behalf of their customers! https://www.officeworks.com.au/information/about-us/pdp/climate-action-3 This not only makes business sense but also paves the way to a sustainable future. Well done Officeworks for making the transition despite the lack of government incentive. This just goes to show that change can be driven by business and consumer mindset without much governmental assistance. Well done Officeworks 💚👏
