They create packaging alternatives by upcycling fallen leaves

What happens to the fallen leaves in Autumn? In cities, they become biological waste that needs to be recycled or composted. Burning them impacts negatively the environment with air pollution. And it's also a waste of resources, as leaves are a source of pulp. That's where the Ukrainian startup Releaf Paper comes in with an innovative solution. While deforestation is an increasing concern, Releaf Paper has developed a unique technology for making paper from fallen leaves.

Releaf's sustainable substitute for virgin pulp paper reduces deforestation rates, lowers carbon emissions and supports cities with the disposal of seasonal green waste. According to Releaf Paper, the process of producing paper generates 78% less carbon emissions compared to traditional wood-based paper production. Moreover, 17 trees are saved per one tonne of cellulose made from fallen leaves. Releaf also claims that the process uses 15 times less water and three times less electricity compared to traditional wood-based paper production.

Releaf Paper was founded in 2020 by Valentin Frechka from Zakarpattia who then partnered with Alexander Sobolenko, a former top manager at Lenovo. In 2023, the company actively entered the French market and planned to build production lines in other European countries, including Finland. Releaf Paper has production facilities in Lutsk, Ukraine, with the current capacity reaching 10,000 tons of paper per year.
I guess my only "concern" or reservation about this is that I believe that leaves should be let to decompose into the ground to improve soil quality! Why would we remove them when they are a natural fertiliser? What do you think?
