Revolutionising the textile industry by mimicking nature 🍃

Meet Werewool, a biotech company with a cool name created by women, that is revolutionising the fashion industry with innovative technology inspired by nature itself. Their unique approach to fashion is rooted in a deep commitment to environmental sustainability and social responsibility.
Werewool is using biotechnology to create sustainable and biodegradable fibers for clothing. They are using proteins found in nature to create fibers with desirable properties such as color, stretch, and water repellency. By using proteins, they can avoid the use of harmful synthetic chemicals that are currently used to achieve these properties in clothing. One of the main advantages of using proteins is that they are biodegradable and do not contribute to microplastic pollution in the ocean, unlike synthetic fibers. The startup's use of proteins also allows for the creation of fabrics that are more durable and sustainable than traditional fabrics, reducing the need for frequent replacements.

Werewool's research and development efforts have focused on engineering a protein similar to keratin, which is found in many animals and forms the basis of hair, wool, feathers, nails, and horns. The startup has successfully created a fiber with color based on the red fluorescent protein found in discosoma coral, and they are now working to identify a protein for water repellency.
Werewool's innovative use of proteins in creating sustainable and biodegradable fibers has the potential to revolutionise the fashion industry by reducing harmful chemicals used in apparel and the amount of microplastic pollution generated by synthetic fibers. A pretty inspiring company! They recently won the ELLE & Polestar Design Towards Zero Award which praises climate initiatives within the fashion industry.
