New York University finally commits to divest from fossil fuels after decades of student activism

After two decades of student-led campaigns, New York University (NYU) has finally committed to divesting from fossil fuels. The announcement came through a letter from NYU's board of trustees, marking a significant victory for climate activists.

Students initiated the divestment campaign in 2004, but for years, the board resisted this move, maintaining investments in fossil fuels. This week, NYU's board announced that the university would no longer directly invest in companies primarily engaged in fossil fuel extraction and exploration, nor seek dedicated private funds for such purposes. This decision reflects a significant shift in the university's stance, driven in part by the changing behaviour of fossil fuel companies.

In 2016, the board argued that investing in renewables and fossil fuels could coexist. Still, many major fossil fuel companies have since scaled back their commitments to climate goals and renewable energy investments, undermining this argument. Student activists, including the Sunrise NYU group, played a pivotal role in this transformation by reinvigorating the divestment campaign in 2021. They gathered over 2,000 petition signatures and engaged in dialogues with the board, ultimately leading to the board's commitment to divestment. Big Climate love to the Sunrise Movement for never stopping to believe in the power of social movements. 💚
