Sweden:The Government says no to new wind farm

The government says no to new wind farm The government says no to a wind farm on Stora Middelgrund outside Halmstad. "We have decided to reject Vattenfall's application to build the Stora Middelgrund wind farm," says Climate and Environment Minister Romina Pourmokhtari (L). According to Pourmokhtari, it is in line with what several authorities have suggested. The government assesses, just like several authorities, that a wind farm cannot be allowed at that location because it would have too great a negative impact on important natural values. The park was planned to be built entirely within a Natura 2000 area, Stora Middelgrund and Röde bank. According to Pourmokhtari, both the County Administrative Board, the Environmental Protection Agency, the Maritime Administration and the Transport Agency have had objections to the plans for a wind farm in the area. According to Vattenfall, the planned park outside Halmstad would have generated 0.9 gigawatts a year. In mid-May, the government gave the go-ahead for two other offshore wind turbines, despite opposition from environmental organizations. It is about the wind farms Kattegatt syd and Galene off the coast of Halland. According to the government, the completed wind farm was estimated to be able to produce between 2.5 and 3 terawatt hours annually, corresponding to 1.5 percent of Sweden's total electricity consumption. Vattenfall regrets the government's announcement, the press department writes in a comment to TT: "We will now analyze the decision more closely to see what consequences it brings." https://www.nyteknik.se/energi/regeringen-sager-nej-till-vindkraftspark/3927976

I suspect that there's so much foul play on this matter and there's no legitimate reason for the rejection. The ministry should however come out clear.

Instead of politically unifying parties as a common threat that must be addressed climate change and the planet has become politically polarised between left and right. It should not be the case - we all need to centre on climate.

@lucinda_ramsay You are right Lucinda, however there are very powerful forces that would like to continue their outdated fossil fuel business models such as e.g. OPEC, Russia. Russia supports right wing parties/states in Europe, Africa and the U.S. and the Swedish right wing party are having a hard time condemning Russia, the war in Ukraine and are even admiring Putin

Wind power is a clean and renewable energy source,i don't understand why one would oppose it.

@jengaj_john Hi Jengaj, there may be some very strong environmental reasons why this decision was taken. Fact is that the Swedish Government is dependant on a right wing party, that in general would like to stop all renewable energy plans and instead go back to fossil fuels
