Fire Your Fossil Bank

Have you ever stopped to think about how your bank uses your money — your savings, investment certificates, retirement funds? Is your bank stepping up to the plate to tackle the climate crisis? Is your bank part of the climate solution or part of the problem? The answer to these questions will astound you. The 2020 Banking on Climate Change Report finds that, overall, bank financing continues to be aligned with climate disaster. Thirty five (35) global banks have funnelled an additional US$2.7 trillion in fossil fuels since the Paris Agreement (2016-2019) with financing on the rise each year. In Canada, our major banks are partnering with the fossil fuel industry and are major funders of climate change - the top 5 bankers of the Tar Sands projects. They are carbon majors and drivers of climate change. My bank (RBC) had the highest Tar Sands financing in 2019 and is the 5th worldwide with USD$141 billion in fossil fuels. In an era of climate crisis, this is morally reprehensible and unconscionable! It's unacceptable. And I’ve decided to do something about it. If my bank won’t divest from fossil fuels, then I will divest from my bank. I've decided to fire my bank Please support this Climate Warning and become one of thousands of Canadians who will use their bank account as a weapon to tackle the climate crisis. HIgh time the old banks turned their drive and boast for billions in profits and turned their attention to being just good citizens on behalf of their paying clients, those who pay for their service, and way too much.

Hey Rolly, It's John O'Brien, Green Gramps on the Hill. I wrote a letter to the president of RBC, last year, (also our bank - for mortgage, investments etc.), so I will send it and the reply that I got back from them in an email to you. I'd like your thoughts on what options are available to us to pull away from them, because they disgust me!! Thanks for taking this initiative on!

Thank you for bringing this out to the spotlight Rolly. I will also investigate if my bank is investing my money in problems or solutions and take immediate action.

Exactly Nick. I'm in the process of severing all ties with RBC or any other big bank in Canada.

Question, which greenish bank also provides the nuclear energy sector. Until now I only see them exclude this unfortunately.

Great initiative Rolly! It's crucial to invest our money in solutions rather than problems. And also to vote by placing money where it can make the best impact 🏞️

I do 100% of my banking with RBC, and I want out. I recently learned that the influence of the financial sector, including our investments, pensions, etc. DWARFS the impact of all of our lifestyle choices combined. Get an EV, go vegan, buy rooftop solar, but your bank and pension plan are 1000% working against all those efforts.

That's why it's so important to get that message out to the millions and millions who use one of those fossil banks. And of course point out what the alternatives are.
