‘Atomic Scissors’: University of Oxford’s Pollution Solution

Repolywise, a start-up founded by University of Oxford researchers, has developed the "Atomic Scissors" technology to tackle the global plastic waste crisis. Funded by a nearly US$500,000 grant from Innovate UK, the technology uses an innovative hydrocracking process to break down hard-to-recycle plastics like polyethylene (PE) and polypropylene (PP) into propane. This propane is sold to the petrochemical industry to create new high-quality plastics, promoting a circular economy.
Repolywise's lab-scale technology currently processes small batches but aims to scale up to handle commercial quantities, from kilograms to tonnes, in the near future. The process is more cost-effective and energy-efficient than traditional recycling methods. Innovate UK is supporting this breakthrough as part of a broader initiative to combat plastic pollution globally.
