For connecting climate with security

Last week, NATO hosted its annual Climate Change and Security Roundtable in Brussels, Belgium. The event brought together government representatives from NATO member and partner countries, as well as renowned climate change experts and scientists, to discuss the impact of climate change on security.
NATO Assistant Secretary General for Innovation, Hybrid and Cyber, David van Weel, said: “Looking ahead, governments will have to manage increasingly frequent environmental hazards, cascading climate risks, while also managing the most ambitious energy transition since the Industrial Revolution. We need to ask ourselves what this means for Allied security in the short term while also looking to longer-term defense planning and identifying measures that we should be putting in place to manage the risks alongside other defense priorities.”
In a time where Big Oil lobbyists try to market fossil fuels as a solution to security issues (instead of admitting that it is a major cause of the problem), roundtables like these are much welcome and needed.
Maybe events like these can also put a thought or two in the heads of all those politicians who argue for the need to increase military spending – while at the same time slashing their nations' climate budgets.
NATO recognizes that the escalating climate crisis poses a big, global security threat.

Try googling the carbon footprint of war. The US armed forces has a bigger carbon footprint than most countries.

@george_kariuki I campaign to have all countries cede all of their armed forces in agreed stages, to a democratically elected United Nations, until war becomes impossible; as discussed in the peace treaty between the USSR and USA that ended the Cold War by the US agreeing to cut WMD in return for democracy in Eastern Europe. The money saved can be spent on the climate crisis.

NATO causes so much damage to the environment through it's war machine that I feel they have no place telling anyone how to take care of the planet.
