Soil washing creates circular flows !

Since 2020, Fortum Recycling & Waste and the construction company Veidekke have been working together to contribute to a sustainable society and a circular economy. The collaboration aims for more sand and gravel to consist of recycled material and to reduce the need for natural sand and gravel.
There are more of us, cities grow and communities develop. This requires expanded infrastructure and more housing. At the same time, we need to reduce the environmental impact and increase the proportion of recycled material in the construction industry and in society.
Each year, approximately 10 million tons of sand and gravel are used in concrete production in Sweden, a material that has become a scarce commodity in many regions. A large amount of soil and sand masses are simultaneously excavated and deposited instead of being recycled or reused in a circular flow. This has led to many landfills already being full or at risk of becoming so within the next few years.
- We cannot continue to extract virgin material as we do today. Materials that are already spinning must be reused. Sand, for example, is becoming a scarce commodity. And without sand we cannot purify water, says Michael Kempi, business developer at Fortum Recycling & Waste.
