Lakes are warming-up even faster than the ocean! In the north, warmer lakes mean less ice, more snow, and stronger waves. Costly to coastal communities. • Lakes have warmed .34 C per decade. That's double the rate of ocean warming, .12 C per decade. • Lake Michigan, one of the largest of the Great Lakes, is getting warmer deep below the surface. Summer is lasting longer, and winter is warmer than in the past. Deep water stores this heat. • Warmer lakes mean less ice, more snow, and stronger waves. Without ice to keep the water in the lake, waves crash into shore, eroding coastlines and damaging infrastructure. What do we do? We get ready for change. Let's learn to live with lakes?
