Danish developer wants to build gigantic green hydrogen factory in West Africa

By: Teun Schröder

Danish developer GreenGo Energy has requested the green light from the Mauritian government for the construction of a wind and solar park with a capacity of 60 gigawatts. The park will be linked to 35 gigawatts of electrolysers for the production of green hydrogen.
If GreenGo Energy receives approval for the plan, aptly named Megaton Moon, it will become one of the largest green energy projects in the world. The company hopes to start the pilot phase in 2028. The final phase is planned between 2033 and 2035.

Hydrogen and ammonia
Once at full power, Megaton Moon produces 4 million tons of green hydrogen or 18 million tons of ammonia annually. Hydrogen can be converted into ammonia together with nitrogen under high pressure and temperature. Unlike hydrogen gas, ammonia can be stored as a liquid in large tanks. This way it can easily be transported around the world.

Government permission
But before that happens, GreenGo must first receive permission from the Mauritian government. According to the company, the country's energy minister Nani O. Chrougha showed "genuine interest" during a recent meeting. The minister also indicated that the country is finalizing legislation regarding the production of green hydrogen.

Own factories
In addition to a combination of wind, solar and electrolysis projects, Megaton Moon also wants to open factories on location where solar panels, wind turbine blades and electrolyser parts are made.

“Mauritania is ideally positioned to become one of the future green hydrogen production hubs of the world for several reasons,” said Karsten Nielsen, CEO of GreenGo Energy. “The country has a lot of sun and wind, has large plains and, thanks to its coast, has access to water and shipping. Production costs for green hydrogen are half – potentially even lower – of those in Northern Europe.” Nielsen even added that Megaton Moon could meet 1 percent of the global demand for green hydrogen in 2050.

Hydrogen is one of the best sources of energy and has zero emission, this is what we need.

I welcome this idea open heartedly but I'd also like to see such efforts on other continents
