Nordic Nutrition Recommendations 2023, a revolutionary step to bridge health and sustainability

Yesterday was the launch of the Nordic Nutrition Recommendations (NNR) 2023 marking a groundbreaking evolution in dietary guidelines. For the first time, these recommendations not only prioritize human health but also highlight the importance of environmental sustainability. By promoting a predominantly plant-based diet with increased fish consumption and reduced meat intake, the NNR2023 aims to create a positive impact on both personal well-being and the planet.
The NNR2023 is the result of five years of extensive research and collaboration among hundreds of experts from Nordic and Baltic countries. It stands as the most comprehensive scientific foundation globally, providing evidence-based insights into optimal food consumption patterns that benefit both individuals and the environment.

The NNR2023 underscores the significance of a plant-based diet rich in vegetables, fruits, berries, pulses, potatoes, and whole grains. It encourages ample fish and nut intake, moderate consumption of low-fat dairy products, limited red meat and poultry intake, and minimal consumption of processed meat, alcohol, and foods high in fats, salt, and sugar.
While the report serves as a shared foundation for Nordic countries it also acknowledges the importance of considering national priorities and local contexts. Ultimately, each country has the flexibility to tailor the recommendations to suit their specific circumstances, ensuring an optimal balance between health, sustainability, and cultural factors. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, Director General of the World Health Organization, commended the NNR2023 for establishing a powerful link between human well-being and a sustainable planet. The inclusive process of public consultation during its development has further enhanced its credibility and acceptance.
