The largest offshore wind farm in the world supplies power on land for the first time

By Teun Schröder
The start-up of Dogger Bank will take place in three phases of 1.2 gigawatts each. Power from the project's first offshore wind turbines at Dogger Bank A is now being fed into the UK national grid via Dogger Bank's high-voltage direct current (HVDC) transmission system.

HVDC has been used since the 1960s to transmit power over distances of more than 50 kilometers, for example to bridge distances between countries. It is the first time that HVDC technology has been used in a British wind farm.

Giant windmills
The wind turbines in Dogger Bank are made by GE Vernova. This company built the enormous Haliade-X 13MW. It is the first time that this type of turbine is used in an offshore wind farm. In the Netherlands, the same model is on the Maasvlakte in Rotterdam. The Haliade-X 13MW is one of the largest wind turbines in the world. A single rotation of the rotor blade with a length of 107 meters is enough to power an average household for two days.

Dogger Bank B and C will also be launched in the coming months. When all 277 windmills are running, they will provide enough power to provide six million households with clean energy every year.

Can it be even bigger?
Two years ago, the Chinese MingYang Smart Energy introduced an even larger mill, the MySE. This mill, equipped with rotor blades of 118 meters long, has a capacity of 16 megawatts. Commercial production of the MySE is likely to start in 2024.

The start-up of the Dogger Bank wind farm is a significant milestone in renewable energy. It's great to see the UK utilizing HVDC technology and the use of giant wind turbines to generate clean energy for millions of households. The introduction of even larger wind turbines in the future shows the potential for further advancements in offshore wind power.
