Hon. Raila Odinga, AUC special adviser on Infrastructure, estimates that Africa needs more than Ksh.25 Trillion to close the energy gap by 2025. The African Union high representative said both public and business sectors must work to close the gap. Raila said Africa's progress is hampered by unreliable energy. Africa has long been called the dark continent due to its low energy generation. The continent has the lowest energy usage, with the average consumer using less than 200 kWh, less than a modern refrigerator. Nearly 650 million people lack steady energy. The Africa Special Advisor on Infrastructure claimed poor energy penetration on the continent is contributing considerably to high poverty levels owing to lack of industrial development. Raila said the continent must work with the private sector to increase investment, particularly in renewable energy.
