UK remains heavily reliant on fossil fuels and consumed about 61m tonnes of oil and 77bn cubic meters of gas last year to meet about three quarters of the UK’s total energy demand. The UK has been heavily reliant on North Sea oil and gas for decades and still relies heavily on it today. At the same time, the UK has committed to reducing its carbon emissions and achieving net-zero emissions by 2050. So while it may be desirable to drill for more North Sea oil and gas, it would be more beneficial in the long-term for the UK to invest in alternatives like renewable energy sources.
