Climate warning

Why Milei is a threat to climate progress in Argentina

Argentina's climate action is facing serious challenges under the leadership of President Javier Milei. Since his far-right government took office a bit more than 6 months ago, environmental protection has suffered, creating concern about the country's ability to meet its climate goals. Although Milei's administration claims he will follow international commitments, its actions tell a different story.
The dismantling of the Ministry of Environment (Hi Sweden!) is one of the most alarming developments. Its responsibilities have been fragmented across various departments, reducing the government's capacity to implement climate policies effectively. Further cuts to environmental funding, up to 65%!, highlight the government's lack of prioritisation for climate action. This comes at a time when Argentina and South America need strong leadership to tackle climate-related issues, including floods, droughts, and heatwaves, which are increasingly impacting the country.
Adding to the uncertainty, Milei and his administration have expressed scepticism about climate change. Despite the scientific consensus on human-caused global warming, the government has downplayed the role of industrialization, calling climate change a "natural and cyclical" phenomenon. This attitude suggests a troubling indifference toward tackling one of the world's most pressing issues.
Milei's government has shifted its focus toward fossil fuel expansion, offering tax benefits and incentives to the oil and gas sectors. This focus on fossil fuels is at odds with the global push for a green energy transition and raises questions about whether Argentina can still deliver on its climate plans under Milei. These developments will threaten international investments and trade agreements, particularly with markets like the European Union, which have high environmental standards.
Milei's administration is a significant threat to Argentina’s climate policy, with a reduced environmental focus, an increased reliance on fossil fuels, and a government denying climate change, the situation is dire for one of the biggest South American players.

Milei’s leadership poses a significant threat to Argentina's climate progress. His administration’s dismantling of the Ministry of Environment, cuts to funding, and scepticism toward climate change undermine Argentina’s ability to meet global commitments. By prioritizing fossil fuel expansion, Milei risks worsening environmental damage and jeopardizing international relations with climate-conscious partners.

He should be brought to justice for his actions. This shift will jeopardize national climate commitments and threaten international partnerships and investments focused on sustainability.

@rosebellendiritu Absolutely. Fossil fuels are a major driver of climate change, contributing to greenhouse gas emissions, air pollution, and environmental degradation. Transitioning to renewable energy sources is vital for protecting the planet.

Expanding fossil fuel production would increase greenhouse gas emissions and hinder the transition to renewable energy.
