5 European airports emit more CO2 than Sweden and Heathrow is in the lead

The CO2 emissions from five of Europe’s biggest airports combined surpass those of the whole of Sweden, a report from the Airport Tracker shows. This tracker is a joint project by the International Council on Clean Transportation (ICCT), ODI, and Transport and Environment (T&E). The total emissions from London Heathrow, Paris Charles de Gaulle, Frankfurt, Amsterdam Schiphol and Madrid Barajas amount to 53 million tonnes of CO2. In 2020 while Sweden emitted some 45.4 million. Because many of the flights from these airports are long distance, they are exempt from the EU and UK’s taxes on CO2, which only cover domestic EU flights. Moreover all these airports are planning to expand. https://www.euronews.com/green/2021/09/28/five-of-europe-s-airports-emitting-more-co2-combined-than-sweden
