Burger King will be one of the first large fast food chains to phase out disposable mugs for drinks in 60 of its restaurants in Sweden. The hamburger chain now starts instead with reusable mugs in which guests get their chilled drink when they eat at the restaurant. Last year, Burger King served just over 10 million mugs of drink in its Swedish restaurants, drive-thru excluded. By switching to reusable mugs, Burger King expects to reduce the mugs' carbon footprint by 90 percent. “It is a small and natural step in the right direction. It is the small advances that contribute and continuously make a difference. Therefore, the phasing out of our disposable mugs in the restaurants is part of a larger effort where we look at all our packaging and new ways to reduce our climate impact, says Maria Finnerman, innovation manager for Burger King in Scandinavia. The new reusable mugs will start to be used in 60 of Burger King's Swedish restaurants at the end of June 2022, and if everything goes according to plan, the mugs will be available in all the chain's restaurants by 2024.
