World Environmental Education Day. Why we should focus on educating younger generations

Today we celebrate World Environmental Education Day, this day was created after the adoption of the Belgrade Chapter which refers to a set of guidelines for environmental education that were adopted by the International Union for Conservation of Nature in 1975 at a meeting in Belgrade, in the ex Yugoslavia. The guidelines set out a framework for environmental education, including the goal and objectives of environmental education, as well as recommendations for its implementation at various levels, such as in schools, universities, and communities.

The Belgrade Chapter underlined that the goal of environmental education is to develop a population that is aware of and concerned about the environment and its associated problems, and that has the knowledge, skills, attitudes, motivations, and commitment to work individually and collectively toward solutions of current problems and the prevention of new ones. It also defined some objectives of environmental education including raising awareness and sensitivity to the environment, providing knowledge about the environment and humanity's role in it, fostering positive attitudes and motivations for protecting and improving the environment, providing skills for solving environmental problems, and promoting participation in environmental problem-solving.
The concept is all the more important today due to the ongoing climate crisis, environmental education can provide individuals and communities with the knowledge, skills, and motivation to take action to mitigate and adapt to the effects of climate change and nations should focus on educating younger generations for the future.
Do you have good resources for environmental education?
