Re-thinking our sustainable approach : recycling, re-use and Worn Wear Program.

The green approach of Patagonia is beyond the product itself and question our methods from A to Z. From building a sports shop in Honolulu using re-use and locally-sourced materials to buying a T-shirt thanks to their Worn Wear Program : they want to have the most eco-friendly impact at each corner of the customer experience. It's great. But what is even better is, not only do they take Climate actions, but they also question our different ways to make it sustainable. Here are some thoughts stated by Patagonia that are interesting for us, as a consumer, when buying a product and the belief in recycling everything. Here's the problem with it : - “We have to choose between sending our pile of unusable clothes to a landfill, sending it to the incinerator or holding on to it until we find a better solution. Since we chose the latter, our stockpile is taking up a room in our Reno warehouse.” -> Showing the issue that, sadly, not everything can be recycled! - The best thing we can do for the planet is get more use out of stuff we already own, cutting down on consumption. Designers need to think about what happens to a product at the end of its life. Companies are saying they are investing millions of dollars in recycling. Wouldn’t it be better if they designed their products better? - Recycling is what we do when we’re out of options to avoid, repair or reuse the product first. First, reduce: Don’t buy what you don’t need. Then, repair: Fix stuff that still has life in it. Also, reuse and share. Then, only when you’ve exhausted those options, recycle. Fact : the average person buys 60% more items of clothing and keeps them for about half as long as 15 years ago. The way we make clothes has to be rethought. What if all new clothes had to have a one year warantee? Wouldn’t that force fast-fashion companies to rethink their business models?

Absolutely. It would be a good pressure on them to improve.

I just did it myself, even though it wasn´t a garment from Patagonia.

Yes Tomas way to go!! And a few small repair shops in town offer to repair your worned out jeans for example, for little cost, if you really don't know how to do it yourself. I hope we could see people taking this initiative by themselves more than relying on brands. Isn't great to wear the same piece of clothes so long that you get attached to it? :)

The clothing industry in every corner of the globe requires to adopt Patagonia's approach. It's crazy how we keep chasing after fashion.

I agree 100% with you! When you think about it, we have such a weird behavior when it comes to this. Consumers should buy less, and businesses should produce better!

Patagonia are a super leading example of firms that are strict with reusing and recycling and has worked for them,I wish lots of countries could embrace this kind program. Nice execution,Patagonia

I like how they challenge our vision on what is a sustainable product and where to situate "recycling" into this whole process. It's so important to get honest opinions about the problems big brands are facing/ what's behind it. It's less about appearances more about being aligned with their story. 👏💚
