Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) in Justdiggit’s Projects

By working together, we can stop climate change and restore nature.
In 2021, the UN announced the beginning of the Decade on Ecosystem Restoration, a rallying call to all nations to prioritise the protection and revival of ecosystems globally. The central message of the decade is, that only with healthy ecosystems can we improve people’s livelihoods, counteract climate change, and stop the collapse of biodiversity.
To support this movement, the aims of the Decade are enshrined in seventeen Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), which encompass taking action on climate change, ending poverty, establishing sustainable food and water consumption and production, through upholding peace, justice and strong institutions worldwide. All Nations of the United Nations General Assembly are signatories to the goals, and you can even track the progress of each goal online at SDG-tracker.org!

Our planet is a closed system, any way we affect the environment has ramifications for the economy, politics, people and so on. In the same way, the Sustainable Development Goals are recognised as being intrinsically connected. Restoring ecosystems directly implicates food security, which affects people and governments. The funding of these goals comes not only from the public sector but also from the private sector, as governments and organisations begin to recognise the myriad economic, social and political benefits of a sustainable future. The SDGs provide a framework for addressing and resolving challenges faced as we head that way together.
As a landscape restoration movement, it is easy to see how Justdiggit fully supports these goals and their intention.

Which Sustainable Development Goals do Justdiggit’s projects impact?
Justdiggit impacts 8 of the UN’s SDGs with clear and tangible metrics on carbon sequestration, the number of trees regenerated, area regreened, water saved, and people positively affected. There are many ways we implement the UN sustainability goals, however, the main goals we impact through our work include:
#1 No Poverty
#2 Zero Hunger
#5 Gender Equality
#6 Clean Water and Sanitation
#8 Decent Work and Economic Growth
#13 Climate Action
#15 Life on Land
#17 Partnerships for the Goals

Some examples of how Justdiggit is meeting the UN sustainable development goals include:
#1 No Poverty
Greener land provides many opportunities for the local people and communities. Justdiggit works to empower and mobilise predominantly subsistence farmers living on under $2/day to regreen their land. By regreening their land, the local communities have better water and food security. As a result of regreening, soil quality improves, increasing crop yields and household income.
#6 Clean Water and Sanitation
By digging bunds and regenerating trees, we have captured billions of litres of rainwater that otherwise would disappear as run-off or evaporate. Once regreened, the soil of these landscapes is more permeable and continues to absorb water well into the future. The more water available in the environment, the more water is available for people and animals to use and drink. Additionally, large scale regreening results in more rainfall, thanks to the transpirtion of vegetation!
#13 Climate Action
The nature-based solutions we implement combat climate change in several ways. Carbon is sequestered through the growth of new vegetation, and when land is correctly managed, the soil also acts as a large carbon sink. Green land is also cooler land, and this impacts local temperatures and rainfall. On a large enough scale, regreening cools down our planet through these mechanisms, while simultaneously supporting ecosystems and people.
