PUMA has made significant strides in sustainability with its innovative RE:FIBRE project, scaling up efforts to create football jerseys using recycled textile waste. From the start of the 2024/25 season, PUMA's football replica jerseys, including those for 35 clubs and major tournaments like the Euro and Copa América, will consist of at least 75% recycled materials. This initiative aims not only to reduce textile waste but also to lessen dependence on plastic bottles for recycled polyester production.
The upscaling of RE:FIBRE builds on the 46,000 jerseys produced in 2023. To achieve this, PUMA is exploring various recycling techniques, such as thermo-mechanical and chemical recycling, to enhance its capacity for recycling textile waste. This effort is part of PUMA's broader vision of creating a more circular business model, with a goal of producing 100% of its polyester products from recycled textile waste. Anne-Laure Descours, Chief Sourcing Officer at PUMA, emphasized that RE:FIBRE is central to PUMA's commitment to sustainability and creating a "Forever Better" future.
To celebrate this milestone, PUMA will host a weekend of activities at its New York flagship store, coinciding with the launch of the AC Milan and Manchester City home replica kits. Fans and customers are invited to join in the festivities, which will include a unique opportunity to acquire limited edition badges upcycled from match-worn jerseys by players like Jack Grealish and Christian Pulisic. These badges, designed by US upcycler and PUMA Voice of a RE:Generation Andrew Burgess, commemorate the expansion of the RE:FIBRE initiative.
On Sunday, July 21, Andrew Burgess will lead three upcycling workshops at the flagship store. These workshops will teach fashion enthusiasts how to customize and upcycle clothing, extending its lifespan and merging sport with fashion. Participants will have the chance to transform a RE:FIBRE t-shirt into a sportstyle-inspired garment, highlighting PUMA's commitment to sustainability and innovation in both sport and fashion.
