Countries hosting significant rainforests commit to collaborative efforts to preserve these vital ecosystems.

Countries hosting the world's major rainforests have agreed to collaborate on combatting deforestation and preserving biodiversity, but they stopped short of forming a concrete alliance to protect these critical carbon sinks. This agreement emerged during the Three Basins summit hosted by the Republic of Congo, bringing together leaders, NGOs, experts, and financial officials to enhance governance and conservation efforts in the Amazon, Congo basin, and Southeast Asian forests. While recognizing the need for cooperation, they have devised a seven-point plan to protect these vital ecosystems.
Republic of Congo's Environment Minister, Arlette Soudan Nonault, emphasized the necessity of joining forces, acknowledging that uniting the three basins is an inevitable step. These basins are home to a significant portion of Earth's biodiversity, but the rapid deforestation poses a threat to global climate goals by releasing planet-warming carbon dioxide. Deforestation increased globally by 4% in 2022, moving further away from the 2030 targets established at the 2021 U.N. climate talks.
During the summit, experts and policymakers from tropical forest nations discussed shared priorities in the run-up to the U.N. COP28 climate talks, exploring various funding mechanisms to support developing countries in conserving their crucial ecosystems. On the sidelines, Congo Republic signed a forest partnership roadmap with the European Union, aiming to increase the protection, restoration, and sustainable management of its forests, create more forest-related jobs, and reduce the rate of deforestation by 2030.
Environmental organizations have emphasized that more concrete collaboration and action are needed to effectively combat deforestation across these three regions.

The collaborative agreement among countries hosting major rainforests to combat deforestation and preserve biodiversity is a positive step forward. While the absence of a concrete alliance is a limitation, their commitment to a seven-point plan to protect these critical carbon sinks is commendable. The urgent need for joint efforts in safeguarding these vital ecosystems is clear, especially in the face of rising deforestation rates and the threat to global climate goals. Concrete actions and further collaboration will be essential to effectively combat deforestation across these regions.
