Data center farming - Climate smart symbiosis [Likes 👍🏼 + Farmers = Food🍅 ?)

By using the waste heat from facebooks datacenters in Luleå we could heat up to 480 000 sqm of greenhouses.. That is 28 times the existing greenhouses in Norrbotten. This idea I want to pitch to Facebook and to all other data centers as well as municipalities in order to ensure this industrial symbiosis already in the zoning plans! Who will be the first to do this in large scale? Self suffienciency on food in Sweden is very low (around 6% in berries/fruit and 50-60% in vegetables) and in northern Sweden in regions such as Norrbotten its even lower - here we only have about 9% self suffiency on vegetables and less than 1% on fruits/berries. Yet there are more sun hours here per year than in Gothenburg so potentials are vast for growing these things in greenhouses. The main thing needed is to heat greanhouses in an affordable and climate friendly way. Currently most greenhouses in this region uses peat moss burnung which contributes to climate emissions. But with every 1 MW of data center we have enough waste heat to warm 4000sqm of greenhous space. And a large scale data center with 10MW (smaller than facebook) could heat a 40 000 sqm greenhouse, provide 100-240 jobs, while saving lots of CO2 emissions. Currently the emissions created from burnung peat moss to heat a 400sqm green house equals 700 flights from Sthlm-Luleå. Food production and imports also plays a big role in our current global emissions and more local sustainable farms and food systems are needed. So the way forward is to increase farming but not our emissions in these regions - and this we do by tapping into this waste heat from Datacenters. Yesterday we concluded the 2 year long #DCfarming research project with a dissemination and inspiration event. Here is the recording of the event for all of you who could not join or simply want to spread the word and share with your wider network! https://youtu.be/vS_QXxAQdtE Big thanks to those who presented - Containing Greens, Boden Business Park (Boden Business Agency) and Barrage data center, and everyone from the #DCodling team! The DC odling project was funded by Vinnova and is a collaboration between RISE Research Institutes of Sweden; Luleå tekniska universitet and The Foodprint LAB architects. Also big thanks to all the dozens of wonderful ambassadors that have followed us throughout the project! To summarize the day - DataCenter-Farming is not only possible, it is already happening and the #opportunities are vast if we just spread awareness and work together in #partnership with cities, spacial planners, farmers, datacenters and researchers! One crucial thing I take with me is the great need for new innovative #businessmodels and also the vital role of the #planning to create #zoningplans that allow both datacenters and greenhouses in the same zone or close enough to establish an #industrialsymbiosis - So please share this to all #architects and #planners out there! Great idea. I think spillover heat could be a huge resource for urban farming. Great to have you here to share your knowledge!
