Quieter and cleaner tearing across the water; James Bond would go for it

By: Ellen Lengkeek
Among the expensive yachts at the Jaarbeurs in Cannes, there will soon be a striking ship from Dutch soil. After almost 7 years of research and innovation, the Dordrecht company Edorado presents an electric, emission-free speedboat that flies over the water.

The Edorado company is an emission-free motorboat manufacturer from Dordrecht that has been working on the speedboat 8S since 2015. The almost 8.5 meter long boat sails using electric propulsion technology and a movable hydrofoil system that requires less energy for high-speed propulsion. “When leaving a dock at low speed or in shallow water, the boat operates as a normal boat. Once flight mode is on, she will take off just like an airplane. You fly comfortably above the waves”, says inventor and CEO Godert van Hardenbroek.

Prime Minister Rutte also took a look
Speedboats, with their environmentally polluting engines, guzzling fuel consumption and noise pollution, do not exactly have a nice - let alone sustainable - image. The company sees this as a challenge and, partly with a subsidy from the SME Catalyst Fund, was developed in the Sustainability Factory in Dordrecht. Prime Minister Mark Rutte also took a look. Years later, the speedboat is now presented in September during the Cannes Yachting Festival in the French port city.

Quieter with battery bank of 80 KwH
For the time being, the 8S is mainly suitable for lakes and rivers. A larger type of 12 meters long will follow later. You have to put serious money on the table for it; about 425,000 euros. “You don't need a Porsche either, but you do want it”, motivates employee Desmond Hof. “And preferably an environmentally friendly one. We sail on batteries, very quietly with little wave action. With a speed of 48 kilometers per hour, about 25 knots, the ship has a range of 64 kilometers, without emissions. On board is an 80 KWh battery bank.”
More often on batteries
The ship's hull is made of carbon, which consists of carbon fibers. Although this light material lasts a very long time, it is also environmentally unfriendly because it is difficult to break down and can hardly be recycled.

Boats and passenger ships that run on batteries have become increasingly common in recent years. The electrically sailing SeaBubble has also been developed in Dordrecht, which will sail autonomously and can transport 4 to 5 people. Just like Edorado, the Swedish company Candela also makes 'flying' speedboats that run on batteries.

Apart from road EVs i strongly agree marine should addopt electric boats, yachts and ships. This will reduce carbon footprint.

Electric boat motors are a great option for a more sustainable and efficient power source.
