Protect Insects to Protect Birds
The Tough Journey of Migratory Birds
11/11/2024 – For the first time this year, the UN is highlighting the importance of insects for migratory birds and calling for more action to protect declining insect populations.
Insects are a vital source of energy for many bird species during the breeding season and their migration. They significantly affect the timing, duration and overall success of bird migrations. Insect populations have declined dramatically in recent decades as a result of insecticide use and habitat destruction linked to agricultural intensification, urbanization and road development. Climate change and biological invasions are also causing insects to die through starvation, disease or predation.
The 2024 World Migratory Bird Day campaign is calling for proactive measures to reverse this decline, such as reducing the use of pesticides and fertilizers, as well as encouraging organic farming.
