A Universal Call to Action to Protect Standing Forests: Gen Z for the Trees Convenes Global Youth Coalition to End Deforestation by 2030
We are Gen Z for the Trees. Our vision is simple: deforestation reversed. Global regrowth, resurgence, regeneration, and renewal of forests. A global economy divested from deforestation. Justice and sovereignty for forest communities.
As young people, as inheritors of a threatened world, we see our collective future with clarity and conviction.
We are calling on you — no matter who you are, where you live, or what you know — to make this future a reality. Together we will hold our leaders accountable, demand our voices be heard, and seize the immense power of our generation.
This is a universal Call to Action — global in scope and spanning generations — for forests, our future, and everyone living on this planet together.
We are calling on companies that have publicly declared their commitment to sustainability to take the next step. We are inviting them to lead this inevitable global transformation. We are calling for real change and genuine collaboration. Transparency, strategic planning, and follow-through are needed for a world free of deforestation.
Gen Z for the Trees, and anyone who wants to join us, is making a promise. Together, as one coalition of forest advocates, we will see this process through with an unwavering commitment to accountability, transparency, dialogue, and results.
Our actions have a greater impact when we work collectively. With each additional signature and voice in our movement, the pressure grows for real changes to prevent further loss of global rainforests.
The status quo is changing. Organized and mobilized, youth around the world are ushering in a more balanced, sustainable, and just future. Business as usual is no longer viable. We are on the precipice of major and necessary change in our relationships with the land and in our global economic, and political, systems.
“For the world is turning into a new thing.” -Richard Powers
The plan:
1. Gen Z for the Trees will launch the Call to Action Campaign on World Rainforest Day 2021 (June 22) and share our Public Letter widely to exhibit the next generation’s desire for real actions from major corporations on deforestation.
2. Between World Rainforest Day and COP 26 (United Nations Climate Change Conference on November 1), we will develop our research into targeted letters with recommendations for specific companies, focusing on grocery retailers and restaurant chains. Gen Z for the Trees Call-to-Action events will be part of a larger campaign to urge corporate contributors to global deforestation to announce specific commitments at the COP to root out deforestation drivers from their business models.
3. Our work will continue after the COP: we will work with these companies to advise their paths forward and to demonstrate ongoing support for forest protection. We will ensure the legitimacy of their commitments and the efficacy of their solutions. We will strive for transparency, along with more ambitious commitments over time.
