Biden administration to cancel Alaska oil and gas leases approved under Trump's presidency

On Wednesday, the US government announced its decision to cancel the remaining leases in Alaska's Arctic National Wildlife Refuge (ANWR) a significant step forward in preserving the sacred natural heritage of the Indigenous Gwich’in. The Interior Department's move to revoke these leases marks a turning point in environmental conservation in the United States and a commitment to protecting one of the most pristine and ecologically vital regions in the country, but it needs to go further.

The Arctic National Wildlife Refuge is a sanctuary for countless species, including endangered ones, and a vital breeding ground for migratory birds. The ANWR's 1.5 million-acre coastal plain, is also an area of profound significance to the Indigenous Gwich'in community. This plain is the migratory path and birthing ground for caribou, upon which the Gwich'in rely.
Cancelling the remaining leases in ANWR safeguards this unique wilderness and sends a powerful message about the importance of environmental preservation. But it's not enough!
Bernadette Demientieff, executive director of the Gwich'in Steering Committee, expressed gratitude for the lease cancellations but also voiced a critical concern. She stressed that their sacred land is only temporarily safe from oil and gas development. Indeed, it's important to note that a 2017 law mandates another lease sale by late 2024. Administration officials have emphasised their commitment to complying with this law, indicating that this is not a permanent halt to lease sales in the region.
Demientieff urged the administration and Congress to repeal the oil and gas program and take lasting measures to protect the Arctic Refuge for generations to come.

I personally don't like Trump but he didn't cancel leases or approve. I'm in Alaska and local articles say trump is very against it as well as opened more drilling sites since 1971. He promises to get it booming again 2024-2028.

This aligns with efforts to transition towards cleaner energy sources and reduce our reliance on fossil fuels for the benefit of both the environment and future generations.

This decision is a significant step, but it should be seen as the beginning of a broader commitment to environmental conservation and Indigenous rights in the United States.
