Umeå municipality lets the grass grow for bees and birds

Freely growing grass and flowers are important for the biodiversity. In Umeå, Sweden 20 percent of all municipally mowed grass areas has been converted to tall grass and meadow areas, an area equivalent to 42.5 football pitches! - It's about promoting ecological diversity. A hard cut lawn is not really good for insects or birds. With todays environmental thinking, it has become much easier to change. Previously, meadow areas and tall grass were often criticized by citizens. Now it's the other way around. Says the city gardener Michael Holmström.
