Kenya set to launch Chiefs’ Climate Action Day

Interior Principal Secretary Dr Raymond Omollo will on Monday, November 4 launch the Chiefs’ Climate Action Day.

The initiative, which will be launched across the country, is a strategy aimed at addressing climate change and implementing the directive by President William Ruto to plant 15 million trees by 2032.

The event sponsored by the State Department for Internal Security and National Administration is set to be held on the first Friday of every month at the local level.

During this event, each chief will be expected to mobilize the public and other stakeholders to plant at least 250 trees per location.

The Government’s plan to plant 15 billion trees by 2032 is aimed at: reducing greenhouse emissions, stopping and reversing deforestation and, restoring 5.1 million hectares of deforested and degraded landscapes through the African Landscape Restoration Initiative which was launched on 22nd December 2022.

Chief's Climate Action Day is an auspicious event that will unite communities to plant trees and combat deforestation. Chiefs will be at the forefront, fostering a culture of environmental responsibility.

By involving local leaders, Kenya can make strides toward achieving its reforestation goals, contributing not only to local environmental health but also to global climate action.

@rashid_kamau Local leadership is often the key to the success of environmental initiatives because these leaders understand the specific needs, challenges, and cultural context of their communities.

This could possibly work as the many Chiefs present in different locations have the ability to mobilize their people to planting trees .

@rosebellendiritu They absolutely have the reach and authority to inspire collective action, communicate the benefits of reforestation, and make tree planting a community priority.

Combating climate change by planting trees are great idea, when it is followed up by serious monitoring and persistent follow up so that plants survive and grow.

Considering the large number of chiefs that Kenya has ..they are likey to mobilize more individuals to plant as many trees as possible bringing about relevant change.

Ken chiefs are the most influential ground mobilizers and this will give them a chance to create real climate impact.
